New Design Dimensions with Textures

June 29, 2021|In SD Blog|By Lauren Espineli

Interior designers should consider how texture—including wood, cement, fabrics, tiles, and lighting— provides a unique and satisfying visual experience for their clients. Combining various materials, layering, and illumination is essential to making a room dimensional and stand out. These five interior designers do just that by creating spaces that pop with artistry.

Wood Paneling: Deborah Berke Partners

Founded in 1982, Studio Designer client Deborah Berke Partners has over 30 years of experience collaborating, sharing, and creating interior design spaces. One of those spaces, North Penn House, a “bold, modern gesture that defines its site,” is a calming, visual escape due to the use of wood panels found through the home including  the fireplace, contrasting mahogany lined windows, luminous tiled floors, and functional cabinetry.

Studio Designer client Charles de Lisle builds furniture, lighting, and objects using bold materials like metal, clay, textiles, and more. Charles spent time wandering the factories near his father’s woodworking shop during his childhood in Massachusetts. His findings and childlike creativity are shown through his ability to create deeply stylish spaces like this Guest Pod in Glen Ellen, California. The moody cement contrasted against the light woods and simplicity of the furniture creates a compelling and streamlined look all achieved with contrasting textures.

Tile of Spain represents 125 ceramic tile manufacturers, part of The Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturer’s Association (ASCER). ASCER represents almost all of Spain’s ceramic tile manufacturers from production to exports. Tile of Spain’s efforts support the ceramic tile industry and improve the urban environment by using ceramic tile as a building material. The tile pictured, APARICI – Joliet is a bright palette of true greens with a ribbed texture that beautifully contrasts with the sleek fixtures in this bathroom.

Layering Textures: Interior Marketing Group

Interior Marketing Group (IMG), founded in 2007 by Cheryl Eisen, is amongst the most unique luxury real estate design and marketing firms in the U.S. supplying award-winning staging, interior marketing services, and interior design services for modern living. Working with a designer Iris Dankner, IMG created an uplifting atmosphere with warm tones and opulent details for the Holiday House in NYC. The ombre staircase layered with the multi-colored and textured flooring, coupled with the playful circular mirrors, creates a calm and plush environment.

Textures of Light and Tile: Studio Shamshiri

Established in 2016, Studio Shamshiri creates acclaimed residential, commercial, and hospitality designs. The Los Angeles-based studio created this magnificent luxury hotel lobby in New Orleans, LA, called Maison de la Luz. The mix of various textures in this space make this design successful with the frosted bulbs of the lighting fixtures to the classic checkered tile floors to the striped walls making a stunning background for the vibrant rug and chairs.
